From a Youth Wellness Coordinator

Hello,

My name is Laurel Wood and I am the Youth Wellness Coordinator for the Medicine Hat Youth Action Society, in Medicine Hat Alberta. Your magazine was reffered to me by a worker at the Community Mental Health office in Medicine Hat. Upon having staff and youth at our youth centre review the magazine we are requesting to be put on your distribution list as we found it very youth friendly and informative. the MHYAS serves youth ages 11-17 and we work on biulding resiliecny in youth. The following is a write up from one of the staff and youth discussing what they liked about your magazine and how it would be used at the centre:

SOS Children’s Safety Magazine

Positive Perspectives:

The magazine has many short stories for the youth to read and look at. The stories are either real life encounters or they are fictional pieces. In both situations the stories are accompanied by very artistic cartoons. These cartoons are created in a format similar to a graphic novel which is very good as most youth are fascinated with graphic novels. The range of the stories is quite wide. In this issue they talk about internet awareness, cyber bulling, eating disorders, drug awareness, teen suicide, and many others.

Along with the stories there is also information provided on a variety of youth resiliency resources. The Alberta Government provided a letter from the Premier in regards to healthy and safe youth. This fits the majority of the advertising that is in the magazine. This is an Alberta initiative and so many different agencies from around the province have advertised in the magazine. This is a great thing for the youth as they can see what resources are available in their town or city.

For the MHYAS:

The SOS magazine will assist many of the youth and clients that visit the Youth Wellness Centre (YWC) in their ever complicated lives as a youth. The wide variety of information and the approach to youth issues in this magazine will entice youth to ask further questions and explore other resources. The SOS magazine will give staff at the YWC a positive position to discuss youth resiliency as well as building a positive rapport with the youth.

Can we please have 15- 20 copies sent to PO BOX 22014 Medicine Hat Alberta, T1A 8M5 each time new SOS magazine issues are distributed to. If you have any questions about our organization please visit mhyas.com or feel free to contact me by phone or e-mail
